About

We are excited to bring a hackathon to Wesleyan this year! While the Wesleyan CS department is great, we all know how few opportunities there are to gain practical programming experience. Luckily for you, there's WesHack! This hackathon is a fun and low-stakes opportunity for you to gain valuable practical coding experience, while also getting free swag, something to put on your resume, and the chance at winning hundreds of dollars in prizes! We are excited to bring the Wesleyan CS community together in this fun event, and we look forward to making some zany projects with you all!

FAQ

CAN I STILL PARTICIPATE IF I'M A BEGINNER?

Yes! We are planning several beginner-friendly workshops and compiling a list of beginner-friendly resources to make sure people of all skill levels are able to participate! If you think you don't have enough experience, WesHack is a fun, low-stakes way to get that experience! Everyone starts somewhere!

WHAT IS A HACKATHON?

A hackathon is a weekend-long event where software engineers, designers, and programmers come together to create a program/application in a short period of time and enter their creations to win various prizes! There will be a recommended theme but you are free to make whatever you want using whatever technologies you want!

WHAT ABOUT COVID VACCINES?

We encourage all participants to get their vaccine Sunday the 25th so that any vaccine side effects don't impact your WesHack experience. We want you at peak hacking potential!

WHAT IS THE THEME?

The theme for WesHack 2021 is "Building Wes Through Code!" We want you to create something to help the Wesleyan community! Think of all the things that bug you, and build something to fix them! You could create the next SpotCheck or OurCampus! You are free to build something outside of the theme, and we’ll be releasing a document of basic project ideas for those who want a little guidance.

WILL THERE BE SWAG/PRIZES?

There will be free laptop stickers for all participants who submit something, and prizes for the top projects in an assortment of categories!

CAN I PARTICIPATE EVEN IF I AM REMOTE?

Yes! All members of the Wesleyan community are welcome! However, if you are remote we won’t be shipping any swag, but you’re welcome to come pick it up next semester!

CAN I BE A MENTOR?

If you’re interested in becoming a mentor and providing assistance to participants during the hackathon also sign up at the pre-registration form! Mentoring will likely take the form of having a set time period you will be available to answer questions that teams have.

ARE TEAMS ALLOWED?

You are welcome to work solo or with a team of your choice! Teams of up to 4 are allowed, and if you want to make some new friends we will have a team-formation discord channel for you to find coding pals! You can indicate your teammates in a later email we will send out!

Our Team

KIRYL BELIAUSKI

I'm a sophomore majoring in CS and Math, and I believe that WesHack will give students an opportunity to make connections with people they would not meet otherwise. I’ve recently been playing a lot of spike ball and Doom Eternal.

ROME DUONG

My interest in coding began when I first completed “Programming with Karel the Dog” on CodeHS. Outside the world of coding, I am very passionate about cycling and playing NFS Most Wanted (2005).

DANIEL GOLDELMAN

I’m a sophomore majoring in CS, and when I’m not working on projects I’m probably playing ${insert instrument here}. I’m super excited to bring WesHack to the growing coding community on campus.

DANIEL KNOPF

I’m a junior double majoring in CS and English, and I’m wildly excited to add another CS sticker to my sticker collection. Oh and to host WesHack, I guess...

ISMAIL LEGHARI

I’m a sophomore majoring in CS, an aspiring software engineer, entrepreneur and a big advocate of Hackathons! Outside of my CS interests, I’m a massive Petrolhead!

ASHLEY TUEN

I’m a sophomore pursuing a major in Economics and Government. I’m illiterate when it comes to the coding language, but I am here to draw cute birds, so that doesn’t matter does it?

CISCO VIELMA

I’m a junior majoring in CS and had no coding experience prior to Wesleyan. Outside of CS I’m a member of Wesleyan’s Sailing Team and enjoy photography in my down time.

RICARDO ZAMORA

I’m a sophomore majoring in CS and Math, and I enjoy connecting with students who share my passions. I joined Code_Wes and WesHack to strengthen the cs community at Wes. Aside from academics, I love anime and hopping on Warzone!
